John Vanderslice emanates sunshine. It is not positivity that comes from naiveté but from living through scraped knees and bruised hearts. John’s songs are beautifully paradoxical, like his hometown of SFO: rough and dark yet comforting and hopeful. Since 2005, we have enjoyed seeing John play live, basking in his warmth and culling from the wealth of his experience. His version of pop is rooted in melodic and emotional complexity, but is welcoming in its effortlessness. His songs, like his positivity, simply pour out of him.
