Grant Olsen’s songwriting has evolved much from former band, Arthur & Yu, to new solo project, Gold Leaves. A&Y found beauty in quiet ordinariness while Gold Leaves explores a complex fusion of doo-wop, R&B and modern folk. The connection is Olsen’s voice – a resonant instrument more akin to backwoods country than polished pop. It’s a pleasant contrast, the perpetual motion of the acoustic guitar and percussion to Olsen’s lilting, almost-country twang. Olsen inspires curiosity, not only in his lyrics but also for subsequent albums.
